Duff was born in Houston, Texas, and started her career at the age of six in the Nutcracker Suite with Columbus Ballet Met in San Antonio with her older sister, ballet dancer Haylie Duff. She decided to pursue an acting career and appeared in a few television commercials. Her first role was in the TV mini-series True Women in 1997. She appeared as the star of the 1998 video Casper Meets Wendy as the young witch Wendy with the animated character Casper the Friendly Ghost. She later appeared as Ellie in the TV movie The Soul Collector in 1999, winning a Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a TV Movie or Pilot (Supporting Young Actress).
During 2000, Spears extended her wins at awards shows beginning with an American Music Award for Favorite Pop/Rock New Artist and the Favorite Female Singer prize at that Spring's Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. Throughout the year, she won for Choice Female Artist and Choice Hottie Female at the Teen Choice Awards, Best-Selling Album (...Baby One More Time) at the Juno Awards and Best-Selling Female Pop Artist at the World Music Awards. At the end of the year, Spears took home two Billboard Music Awards for Album Artist of the Year (Oops!... I Did It Again) and a special award for Highest One-Week Female Artist Album Sales in History (Oops!... I Did It Again).
